Welcome to the Fabric Community DataViz Contest for the month of May 2025! Weโre running our first community-led contest where weโll regularly explore a new theme through data storytelling - and this time, weโre taking flight with a topic thatโs all around us: Birds.
๐ Key dates:
- 1 May 2025: We'll release the dataset and the contest begins at 9:00am PT.
- 21 May 2025: Contest closes, submissions are due by 11:59pm PT.
- 30 May 2025: We'll announce the winner!
๐ฆ This Month's Theme: Birds
May marks the heart of bird migration season in many parts of the world, especially across the Northern Hemisphere. As temperatures rise and ecosystems bloom, millions of birds travel vast distances between continents, transforming skies and soundscapes as they go. Itโs a time when people all over the world look up in wonder (and we thought it was the perfect opportunity to do the same with our data!).
Birds also give us a fascinating lens into biodiversity, climate, habitat change, and even culture.
๐ค Did you know?
- The bar-tailed godwit holds the record for the longest nonstop flight - traveling over 8,000 miles from Alaska to New Zealand without landing once (not even to eat or sleep!) It flies for more than 10 days straight powered purely by stored fat.
- Swifts can stay in the air for up to 10 months without landing - eating, sleeping, and even mating mid-flight. These aerial acrobats practically live in the sky, touching down only to nest.
- Some birds migrate at altitudes higher than Mount Everest. The bar-headed goose, for example, soars over the Himalayas at heights above 29,000 feet, where oxygen levels are dangerously low (yet they do it with ease!)
๐ก Get inspired by questions like:
- Where do different bird species migrate across the seasons?
- How have bird populations changed over time?
- What are the top birdwatching spots globally?
- How does urbanization affect native bird species?
๐ Datasets to Get Started With
Your task is to find a dataset related to birds, analyze it, and create a compelling Power BI report. Youโre welcome to use any dataset that fits the theme - but if you're not sure where to start, here are a few great options to explore:
๐ ๏ธ Requirements
Your submission will be evaluated based on how well it meets the following:
๐ Get and transform data
- Choose a dataset that relates to this monthโs theme: birds.
- You must cite the source of your publicly available dataset clearly in your report.
- Use Power BI to import and transform your data as needed.
๐จ Create engaging visuals
- Use at least one Power BI core visual.
- Visuals should be engaging, clean, and insightful.
- Meet accessibility standards: include alt text, set a logical tab order, and ensure color contrast is readable.
๐ Challenge Duration
- The Power BI Challenge runs from 01 May 2025 to 21 May 2025.
- Submissions must be completed and shared by 21 May 2025 to be considered.
- Late submissions will not be accepted after the deadline.
๐ How do I participate?
- Join the Fabric Community: You must be a member of the Fabric Community to participate. Select either Register or Sign-In in the menu at the top of this page to join!
- Create Your Winning Report: Read the contest requirements (above) and use Power BI to design data visualizations that are insightful, visually effective, accessible, and creative. Your report must contain at least one core visual and no more than 5 report pages.
- Submit Your Entry: Entries will be submitted in the contests gallery between May 01 and May 21. Note that you do NOT need to have a Power BI tenant to submit. You can submit either a Publish to Web URL or a Power BI Desktop file (.pbix).
- Ask questions: add to the forum discussion with questions or comments! See the official rules for more info.
๐ How will entries be scored?
Submissions will be scored by a panel of judges 40 points based on the following:
- Insightfulness (10 points): are insights meaningful, clear, and relevant to the theme?
- Visual Effectiveness (10 points): is the report visually clear, easy to follow, and informative?
- Accessibility (10 points): was the report designed for accessibility, considering alt text, tab order, and appropriate color contrast?
- Wow factor/creativity (10 points): was the report designed creatively? Did the creator think outside the box? Does the report stand out?
๐ Need Inspiration?
Not sure where to begin or just want to see whatโs possible in Power BI? Check out the incredible entries from the Power BI DataViz World Championships in the Featured Gallery. These reports showcase a wide range of data storytelling styles - from beautifully themed reports to and creative visual hacks.
